LÜFTEN

My grandmother would often open the windows of the house for ‘frische luft’—German for fresh air. In Germany it is common practice to open all of the windows of one’s home and allow all of the stagnant, dead air to be cycled out with healthier fresh air. This practice is called lüften. While creating these photographs I was thinking about lüften as a metaphor for time spent in solitude, ideally during downtime and without distraction.

Through images of everyday experience Lüften taps into a secluded and meditative mindstate, accessed through an attention to one’s own sensory experience. What is seen; what is felt. The subtleties of experience that are noticed and linger on. These images encourages the viewer not to look at the subject in a new light, but to look at one’s own looking anew.
